It’s that time of year again folks. I’ve been struggling to get into the festive spirit this year. Maybe its the fact that we don’t have a house so I can’t get excited about decorating, or maybe its because it’s the first year of having a minimalist Christmas for us and I’m not stressing about money and presents, who knows? But this week I’ve been thinking about the small traditions that we do with the girls to create that childhood Christmas sparkle.
One of my all time favourite family traditions is our festive book advent calendar. The premise is super simple. 24 festive books wrapped up in a basket by the tree. Each night the girls unwrap a book and we read it snuggled together in bed or by the tree. It is the one tradition that the girls talk fondly of all through the year.
The books in our basket are a mixture of old and new. There are the old classics that we add every year. I then go through the rest and donate books that they have grown out of and add new. When I say new I mean new to us, this isn’t supposed to cost the earth, whilst I will buy a couple of new books I also hunt charity shops and second hand book shops for suitable books or buy second hand from amazon.
Here are the books in our book advent this year, hopefully it’ll inspire you to create a book advent of your own. It’s a real joy to share with all of the family.
8. Snow Day
12. Santa Claude
13. The Nativity
17. Elf Chase
21. Father Christmas
23. Pick a Pine Tree
And this beauty that we read as an extra every year on Christmas Eve…
I hope this has inspired you to create your own, or just given you some beautiful book ideas. If there are any fantastic Christmas books that you recommend or if you do your own twist on an advent calendar then please let me know, or share on social media and tag us in it.
I really can’t wait to share all of these gorgeous Christmas books with the girls, all cosied up in December.
